The orchard of King Louis (Poem by Théodore de Banville) |
||
On her wide outstretched arms, The forest where Flore stirs, Bears clusters of hanged men Whom the morning caresses and gilds. This somber wood, where the oak houses Fruits of a kind unknown Even among the Turks and the Moors. This is the orchard of King Louis. All these poor wretched souls, Harbouring thoughts unknown to us, In frantic whirlwinds Still flutter and shudder. The rising sun devours them. Behold them, blazing skies, Dance in the fires of dawn. This is the orchard of King Louis. The hanged, heeded by the devil, Call to other hanged men. While in the sky, stretched blue, Where a meteor seems to glow, The rose in the air evaporates, A rejoicing swarm of birds Pecks at their heads. This is the orchard of King Louis. Prince, there is a wood adorned With hanged men swallowed In the soft murmur of the foliage. This is the orchard of King Louis! |
