| Le grand Pan | The grand Pan | ||
In the time when the great Pan ruled, The gods protected drunkards: Many rickety geniuses, Red nose, red cheeks. As soon as a man emptied his flask, Or a boozer went carousing, They would arrive in droves looking for him, Counting the corks. The humblest booze was then blessed, Distilled by Noah, Selene and company, Wine bestowed lustre on the lowliest of men And the most trivial sponge looked like Bacchus. But scratching their heads, shouting «I've got it!» Professor Nimbus’s gang arrived And began putting the sky in order, Chasing the gods out of the universe. Today, here and there, people still drink, And the flames of wine still make cheeks glow red, But the gods are no longer responsible for drunkards: Bacchus is an alcoholic, and great Pan is dead. When two happy fools Enjoyed themselves at play, Many geniuses in love Would rush in to play gooseberry. From the depths of the Elysian Fields, As soon as they heard a «I love you», They would run at once To count the kisses. The humblest infatuation was then blessed, Glorified by Aphrodite, Eros, and company. Love gave glamour to the lowliest of men And the simplest lover looked like Venus. But scratching their heads, shouting «I've got it!» Professor Nimbus’s gang arrived And began putting the sky in order, Chasing the gods out of the universe. Today, here and there, hearts still pound And the rules of love are the same, But the gods are no longer responsible for lovers: Venus became a woman, and great Pan is dead. And when the fatal time came To don a shroud as clothing, Many geniuses, eyes in tears, Would offer you posthumous honours. To reach the celestial empire They would come to take you on their boat. It was almost a pleasure To give one's final breath. The humblest corpse was then blessed, Taken care of by Charon, Pluto and company. Even the lowliest of men was granted a soul And the simplest human gained eternity. But scratching their heads, shouting «I've got it!» Professor Nimbus’s gang arrived And began putting the sky in order, Chasing the gods out of the universe. Today, here and there, people still pass away, But the grave is, alas! the final home, The gods are no longer responsible for the dead: Death is natural, and great Pan is dead. And one of the last gods, one of the last supreme spirits, Does not feel at ease in his own skin. One day we are going to see Christ Coming down Calvary, teeth rumbling: « Shit! I'm no longer playing along for all these poor souls! I fear the end of the world is going to be quite sad.» |
