| La visite | The visit | ||
On n’avait aucune intention De razzia, de déprédation, Aucun but illicite. |
We weren't Bluebeards, Neither scruffy nor scubby, Carriers of parasites. We were not swordsmen, We came from the neighboring country, We came to visit. We had no intention To plunder, to pillage No illicit purpose whatsoever. We did not come to loot their place, We did not come to steal their eggs, We came to visit. We weren't letting out Indian war cries, We advanced with dignity And hesitating pace. We weren't brandishing revolvers, We arrived with open arms, We came to visit. But they went into their holes, But they locked their doors In a tacit agreement. They closed their shutters, They hid women and children, They refused our visit. We did not come to lecture them, Or try to indoctrinate them, Nor come to take over their site. We came to say to them, as we passed by, A little innocent hello, We came to visit. We came to introduce ourselves, We came to associate with them, So they might acclaim us, In the hope of being admitted And naturalized as friends, We came to visit. Unfortunately, they did not want Our superfluous friendship That nothing called for. And we closed our hands, And we turned back, Called off the visit. |
